11th Day of Lent - Saint Florian 👨‍🚒 A Patron Saint of Firefighters and Beer!

On this 11th calendar day of Lent, March 12, 2022, we celebrate Saint Florian, well known as the patron saint of firefighters. Many firefighters and their families wear the Saint Florian medal for protection from fires.

Saint Florian is an Austrian Saint and many also pray for his intercession during times of floods and famine.

One of the legends about Saint Florian involves Florian saving a small town or a small church, depending on the tale you wind up hearing. It’s basically the same story though, despite the descriptions of the things protected.

Folklore says that a town… or a church… or a neighborhood wound up engulfed in flames. It seemed like nothing could be done to prevent the destruction from the fire.

Saint Florian came along and found a pitcher to fill with water (some say it was actually filled with beer). He took the pitcher and slowly poured the fluid on the town… or church… or neighborhood and presto change-o, the fires dissipated, thanks to Saint Florian.

It's no wonder that besides being the patron saint to protect us from the ravages of fires, Saint Florian is also the saint for brewers and their beer!
