This is the story of Mater Dolorosa!
Our Lady of Sorrows
The Contemplative Face of Sorrow,Enlightenment and Reconciliation
The “Sorrowful Mother,” or Mater Dolorosa, is one of the most replicated and famous images known in Roman Catholic art and iconography. The Virgin Mary is typically portrayed clasping her hands, perhaps in prayer, and looking up the face of her Son, Jesus, the Heavenly Father, or both. Mater Dolorosa has lived to see her only son crucified for all men so that sins will be forgiven and we all be brought to Everlasting Life. Many musicians, artists, and writers have been fascinated at the depth and magnitude of Mater Dolorosa’s image. The 15th Century Netherlandish painter, Dirk Bouts, spent decades working on artistic renderings of her and The “Stabat Mater Dolorosa” is commonly recognized as one of the 7 greatest Latin Hymns of all time. © 2008 |
