“OLOPS”

Invoked for Perpetual Help

Our Lady of Perpetual Succor’s story took place long ago! In 13th Century Byzantine style, OLOPS is a painting on wood representing the Mother of God holding the Divine Child while the Arch Angels’ Michael & Gabriel hover above. OLOPS was brought to Rome at the end of the 15th Century and was exposed to the public at the Church of San Matteo. Crowds flocked for viewing and many special graces were obtained. OLOPS was then called “Madonna di San Matteo.” The Church was run by the Hermits of Saint Augustine who protected and sheltered the Irish. When the church was destroyed, it was believed the painting was lost but it was providentially discovered at the Oratory of Augustinian Fathers in Maria in Posterula. The Pope was interested in OLOPS and ordered its display for public veneration in Via Merulana at the Church of Alphonsus. In the United States, OLOPS is venerated but better known as “Our Lady of Perpetual Help.”
