This is the story of Helen!
Patroness of New Discoveries;
Invoked for Perseverance
Helen's story took place long ago. In the year 292, she was divorced by her husband when he found a "trophy wife," Theodora, the step-daughter of Emperor Maximian. Helen's husband selfishly decided that Theodora was his ticket to fame and fortune. Helen was abandoned and left to live in exile; she suffered alone for many years. In 306, Helen's son, Constantine, became Emperor and afterward, Helen again held status in the community. Constantine declared Helen an Empress and titled her Augusta. Helen's son was a great leader and a great son; he even had coins minted with a likeness of his mother on them! In 313, Constantine gave Christians complete freedom of belief and soonafter, Helen converted to Christianity. She was known for her selflessness and generosity; Helen gave tirelessly to the church, prisoners and the poor. In 324, Helen went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and discovered the cross Jesus was crucified upon. In art, Helen is shown holding the cross as she is in our SfS medal. Pray to Saint Helen when friends or family leave you abandoned as they look for "greener pastures" Saint Helen will help you make new discoveries and provide faithful perseverence. www.saintsforsinners.com © 1999 |
